Hoarse Whisper

The openness of the Playdate architecture and “load games from anyone, anywhere” mentality means you can get some truly unhinged things on here, and we don’t really talk about those games much. There’s some stuff on Itch that seems more meant to shock than utilize the adult themes in a way that can be cathartic, but there’s other stuff that’s just… wow, I sure just played that. Someone spent time making it, and I spent time playing it, and it’s probably going to occupy part of my brain forever. Hoarse Whisper falls into that category for me.

From the creator of Touch Egg, this is a game released for free on April Fools’ Day 2025. It uses the microphone, and the crank, and it has speech and music best experienced with headphones. In it, you whisper into the microphone and get a response. Then you get a little visit from someone you may have heard of, and this person has some… ideas. Then you get to make a decision, and then you enjoy a rockin’ credits sequence. It’s over in just a few minutes, and the art is definitely not made by AI. AI could never come up with something like this. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so get some headphones and spend a few minutes seeing what someone can make when they feel like it. You can, too!

From the Itch page: “We think this game is suitable for nobody.” And that’s beautiful.

(Released April 1, 2025, on Itch for free.)
